San Diego School Enrollment Expected to Drop Next Year

More kids are attending San Diego City schools this year but the outlook doesn't look so bright for the next academic year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The San Diego Unified School District was the only large urban school district in the state that added more kids to its roster this year. But now school demographers say the unanticipated growth spurt may be over. They expect the district to lose 500 kids this coming school year. The district's middle school grades will be hit the hardest. They also say charter schools will see a drop after years of continual growth.

Demographers say the good news is more kindergarteners are expected to attend city schools next year. That's because families are having more babies. When it comes to ethnicity, the numbers show more Hispanic and Asian students are expected to enroll than ever before.

Demographers say these are preliminary numbers. They expect things to change as the new school year draws near. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
