The San Diego Unified school board approved a plan yesterday that will give Barrio Logan its first and only high school. The board also heard plans for two more charter schools in other parts of the district. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
King-Chavez High School will be operated by the King-Chavez charter school group. The group already manages five elementary and middle schools in the area. Those schools cater to low-income Latino students. Teacher Jeb Hubb says King Chavez students will continue to improve now that there's a high school that's like the charter schools. He says parents are happy their kids can now stay in Barrio Logan instead of getting sent to another high school.
Communities like Barrio Logan get forgotten sometimes. So something like this can be a really positive thing that can bring a community together.
King Chavez High School is expected to open next year.
In other charter school business, the school board received blueprints for two new charters in other parts of the district. One would cater to families in downtown San Diego. The other would cater to parents who want to homeschool their kids with the support of credentialed teachers.
