Two California lawmakers are calling for better supervision of sex offenders. Democratic Assemblywoman Fiona Ma and Republican Assemblyman Anthony Adams are responding to a state audit that found sex offenders living in homes used for foster care and children's day care. According to the report by the State Auditor, the addresses of 49 sex offenders matched 46 child care facilities. Assemblywoman Ma says changes are needed to give families peace of mind.
Ma: Parents who go to work, drop off their kids in the morning, pick them up, should not have to worry about the safety of their children while they are there, working."
The Department of Social Services says it has investigated all 46 facilities and has suspended the licenses of nine. The department head says 13 others require further investigation, and 24 had an invalid address. Facilities are required by law to report any adult working there to Social Services for a background check. Assemblymembers Ma and Adams say they're working on legislation that would close the loopholes in the current law that allowed these sex offenders to slip through the cracks.
