As Governor Schwarzenegger was promoting one redistricting measure, the outgoing Speaker of the State Assembly was introducing one of his own. From Sacramento, Marianne Russ reports.
Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez is pushing a wide ranging political reform measure. It takes the job of drawing legislative districts away from lawmakers and gives it to a 17 member commission. Nunez says his plan allows for more diversity than the proposal backed by Schwarzenegger. The Speaker's measure also includes some blackout periods on fundraising for lawmakers and the Governor.
Nunez: During obviously the budget time and for the governor during the time that the governor is signing bills, so that we can build a little confidence in state government.
Nunez says his measure also modifies term limits. It reduces the total time in office from 14 years to 12, but allows lawmakers to serve them all in one house.
Nunez, who is termed out in December, hopes to get the measure on the November ballot.
