Tom Fudge: San Diego has hosted many of the nation's top sporting events. And this week it's the U.S. Open of golf. First round play begins on Thursday, and all of the big names will be at the Torrey Pines golf course . Tiger Woods. Phil Michelson. Vijay Singh. And Jim Nantz .
You people who follow sports know that one of those names is not like the others. Jim Nantz is not a top professional golfer, but he may be better known than any of the rest of them, Tiger Woods excepted. That's because Nantz has been the face and voice of CBS Sports for many years, and he's done it all. He's called the Super Bowl, the Final Four, the Masters Golf tournament. He's had a long history calling PGA golf matches, and he'll be in San Diego this week for the U.S. Open.
Jim Nantz may be the country's top sports commentator working today. And this year he's published a book about his career and his relationship with his father, who's spent many years suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. The book is called Always by My Side: A Father's Grace and a Sports Journey Unlike any Other .
