Baja California investigators in Mexico have arrested two people for allegedly murdering four migrants in Tecate about a week ago. State law enforcement officials say the men are tied to ogranized crime. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Baja California Attorney General Rommel Moreno says a group of 20 migrants was about to cross the border near Tecate when they were held up by a group of robbers.
The five men asked the migrants for their money. The group resisted and the robbers started shooting.
In the end, four people were killed, including a 17 year old. Two injured men ran across the border to the U.S. and were rescued by the Border Patrol.
Moreno believes the attackers are tied to drug trafficking
Moreno says drug trafficking groups are now charging migrants' a toll for passing through certain areas. He says some drug traffickers kidnap, some rob, many have turned to crimes they didn't used to commit.
Law enforcement authorities have tied the guns used to kill the migrants to four other homicides in the border region.
According to a press release issued by the state attorney general's office, three of the alleged killers are still on the loose.
