Tidelands Bill Passes California Legislature

A bill that would reinforce restrictions on the use of public tidelands has passed the California Legislature. The California State Senate approved the bill Wednesday. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The bill was drafted in response to private development along San Diego's waterfront.

San Diego Assemblywoman Lori Saldana says her legislation would close loopholes that have allowed private use of lands set aside for public use.  In San Diego those lands are used for boating, fishing and tourism.

Saldana says the loopholes became apparent when the Navy entered into a controversial 99-year lease in 2007 with a private developer on San Diego's waterfront. She says the bill won't affect how the Navy uses the waterfront.

The bill would remove a statue that allowed cities to make special arrangements for public land use with the U.S. Government.

The Assembly must approve amendments to the bill before it heads to Governor Schwarzenegger to sign or veto
