Fire Near Campo Nearly Contained

A wildfire evacuation order has been lifted for about 300 homes in San Diego County near the U.S.-Mexico border. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has more on the Shockey fire near Campo.

Nick Schuler with Calfire says the 200-acre fire is 70-percent contained.

He says the fire near Campo is expected to be fully contained early this evening.

Schuler says two key factors helped firefighters.

Shockey:
Even if the winds were strong they weren't as strong as like in 2007 when people were expecting you know, 70-80 mile an hour winds. But also keep in mind CalFire did pre-position a large number of resources in the region. And that was really effective by being able to utilize those resources.

CalFire moved additional crews and equipment into San Diego County over the weekend when Santa Ana conditions were expected to create dangerous fire conditions.

Schuler says no homes were damaged or destroyed in the fire that started just before 3 a.m. this morning.

He says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
