Two of
San Diego Unified's
school board members are up for reelection this year. But only one of them is getting help from the local teachers union. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the details.
Incumbents Sheila Jackson and Mitz Lee
are fighting to keep their positions on the school board. But Jackson is getting a financial boost from
the teachers union.
Campaign disclosures show the union has poured more than $200,000 into its own campaign to get Jackson reelected. That's in addition to about $12,000 Jackson has raised on her own.
In comparison, Jackson’s opponent -- teacher
Xeng Yang
-- only raised about $1,600.
The teachers union has also spent more than $200,000 for newcomer
John Evans
. He's competing against incumbent
Mitz Lee
. She's raised about $33,000.
The union sides with Jackson and Evans because they're friendly to teacher issues and against layoffs.
A change in trustees could shift the balance of power on the board. Whoever wins will preside over the second largest public school district in the state, with a new superintendent, and a multimillion dollar budget deficit.
