Plans for a new downtown San Diego Library are still alive after a California official decided to keep a grant for the project in place for now. KPBS reporter Katie Orr explains.
The grant of 20 million dollars was set to expire next Wednesday. But an extension was requested while San Diego officials consider the possibility of including a high school in the project. The California State Librarian says she needs more information. In the meantime she’s put the grant on hold until February. Mel Katz is the Vice Chair of the Library’s Foundation Board. He says the Division of State Architects will now have to review the Library plans.
Katz: There are a lot of different requirements for putting a school in a building. And they will have to go over all of our different plans and we will have to make changes to those plans because of the school.
Katz says the San Diego Unified School District would contribute 20 million dollars to the project. The Library will cost 185 million.
