Special Election Will Be Financially Difficult for Some Counties

California's Special Election is fast approaching, but cash-strapped counties say they're still not sure how they'll cover their costs.

When lawmakers passed the state budget last month, they only left county clerks with a few months to get ballots ready for May 19th.

Governor Schwarzenegger has vowed to give them some state funding for election expenses.  But, Jean Hurst with the California State Association of Counties says reimbursement probably won't happen until voting is done.

"The way that we're going to encourage the administration to move forward is when they put out the governor's revised budget sometime in late May or early June that they develop an estimated cost," Hurst says. "You know we're thinking somewhere around 70-million dollars on a statewide basis…"

Early ballots for the special election should be sent out by April 9th.  The last day to register to vote is on May Fourth.
