East Coast Man Finishes Cross Country Trek In San Diego

If you see a young man walking on the side of the road through San Diego County, pushing a three-wheel jogging stroller with a bunch of stuff in it, it's probably 27-year-old Stephen Homsey.

He's been on a cross-country walking trek since May, when he left his hometown in Massachusetts.

Homsey has gone through eight pairs of shoes, fought severe weather and had lots of interesting adventures, all to raise money for multiple sclerosis research.

So far, he's raised $10,000 through his website Steps for MS.

This week he's on the last leg of his trip. He will cross the finish line and celebrate with family and friends in Coronado Friday.

"After going through the U.S. there really isn't anything challenging through San Diego. The weather is beautiful, the scenery is unbelievable. It's been all positive so far," Homsey said.

Homsey doesn't know what it's like to have MS. But he knows what it's like to struggle with mobility, just like many patients who suffer from the disease.

In 2009, he fell 40 feet from the side of an apartment building. He broke his legs, his arms and his back. He couldn't walk for six months.

That experience helped him understand the plight of MS patients.

"As I got better and as I started to learn more about MS, and it was really a self-driven motivation," he said.

The Virginia-Tech graduate said he plans to go back to the East Coast after he's finished with his journey, and embark on a new one: job hunting.
