OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Sprinter light-rail service between Oceanside and Escondido will resume Saturday, transportation officials said today.
The North County Transit District took the trains of service on March 9, because the brakes were wearing out too fast. The time-out enabled the NCTD, railcar maker Siemens and contract operator Veolia to install new split-disc rotors on center axles.
At 4:33 a.m. Saturday, Sprinter trains will start running again, according to the NCTD.
Buses bridged gaps in service while the trains were out of commission.
Supplementary bus service will end May 24, the NCTD said.
Sprinter service was suspended a day before the agency was to celebrate the Sprinter's five-year anniversary, but those plans were scrapped.
After repairs and a thorough review of railcar safety equipment, testing was supervised by the Federal Railroad Administration and the California Public Utilities Commission.
The Sprinter, its tracks and signals passed all tests.
