The San Diego International Airport won a World Routes award for its air service development efforts last year, the airport's first award in a global competition, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority announced Friday.
The World Routes Awards are given out annually to airports judged by industry officials to provide the best overall air service marketing to airlines, including the establishment of new or developing existing routes, delivering results and providing data, airport officials said. The San Diego International Airport won the Routes Americas 2013 award for the four to 20 million passenger category at the ceremony in Las Vegas earlier this month.
"This prestigious award helps highlight how hard our airport team works to bring communities together,'' San Diego County Regional Airport Authority president and CEO Thella F. Bowens said. "Many thanks to our airline partners for their commitment to San Diego, and to our travelers who keep the routes successful.''
Airport Authority officials said the San Diego International Airport was recognized for its work with four airlines to ramp up service from San Diego.
Last year, 10 new routes were added and service to Hawaii and Mexico was expended, officials said.
