Three top city of San Diego officials were named deputy chief operating officers on Wednesday by Interim Mayor Todd Gloria.
The positions were created when the City Council approved a reorganization of the mayor's office last month.
Tony Heinrichs was promoted from director of the Public Works Department to a deputy COO in charge of infrastructure and public works.
Financial Management Director Jeff Sturak was named deputy COO of Internal Operations.
Ron Villa, director of administrative services for the San Diego Police Department, will be deputy COO for neighborhood services.
"These individuals are all well-suited for their new roles, and I trust them to work with our dedicated city employees to serve San Diegans proudly and effectively," Gloria said. "I appreciate their willingness to step up to these leadership positions and assist me, our chief operating officer, and our assistant chief operating officer in accomplishing our shared goals."
Before the reorganization, the mayor's office had a COO and assistant COO overseeing all of the city's operations. Gloria said the result was slow decision-making, a lack of communication between departments, and an inability to spot or avoid problems.
