San Diego police investigate after officers shot a burglary suspect on Merrington Place in Mira Mesa.

A burglary suspect shot by a San Diego police officer in Mira Mesa was hospitalized in fair condition Tuesday, police said.

Officers received a report of a naked man committing a burglary in the 7900 block of Merrington Place around noon Monday, according to San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings.

Once there, an officer saw a neighbor, armed with a baseball bat, standing by watching the suspect, who was standing in a side yard, barefoot in glass from a home's broken window, Hastings said in a statement.

"When the officer gave verbal directions to the suspect, the suspect attacked the officer," he said. "After an extended physical fight, the suspect pushed the officer through wood panels of a side yard fence into a neighboring yard."

The officer zapped the suspect twice with a stun gun, but it had no effect, Hastings said.

"The suspect again charged the officer and tried to remove the officer's gun from its holster," he said. "The gun fell to the ground. The suspect reached for the gun but the officer retrieved it first. The suspect tried to disarm the officer again and the officer fired at the suspect, striking him in the upper torso."

Even after he was wounded, the 27-year-old man continued to fight until additional officers arrived and helped take him into custody, Hastings said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in fair condition, Hastings said.

The officer sustained minor injuries, he said.
