A 49-year-old San Diego High School teacher is in custody on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with an underage student, authorities announced Monday.

Detectives arrested special-needs-curriculum instructor Juan Carlos Herrera on Sunday, according to San Diego police.

Last week, the alleged victim's mother reported finding suspicious and concerning text messages from Herrera on the girl's cellphone, Lt. Carole Beason said.

"Sex-crimes detectives determined there was a sexual relationship between the teacher and the student that began when the student was 15 years old," Beason said.

Herrera was booked at the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of six counts of luring and having sex with a minor. He was being held on $220,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
