A chance of light rain will continue Friday in most parts of San Diego County and snow could fall in the mountains, according to the National Weather Service.
A low-pressure system currently over central California will linger longer than expected before leaving the region by Saturday morning, forecasters said. A chance of rain will continue everywhere except the deserts until late tonight.
A winter weather advisory expired at 4 a.m. Friday in the county mountains above 4,000 feet.
As of 7 p.m. Thursday, 6 inches of snow was reported at Birch Hill on Palomar Mountain, while Lake Cuyamaca got 2 inches of frozen white flakes.
Snow levels will be around 4,500 feet this morning before rising to about 5,000 feet Saturday morning.
Trace amounts of snow could fall on the county mountains above 4,500 feet Friday.
NWS officials warned that the snow could limit visibility and make roads slippery, so motorists should use caution while driving.
Rainfall totals through Saturday morning are expected to reach a three- tenths of an inch in coastal areas and the county mountains, while the inland valleys could get up to two-tenths of an inch.
The chance of measurable precipitation is 20% Friday in coastal and inland valley areas, while the mountains have a 40% chance.
In a 48-hour period ending at 4 a.m. Friday, Lake Cuyamaca had received the most rain, 1.9 inches, followed by 1.73 in Mesa Grande, 1.57 in Pine Hills, 1.56 in Julian, 1.45 at Henshaw Dam, 1.33 at Birch Hill and 1.31 in Santa Ysabel.
Other noteworthy rainfall totals included 0.97 in San Marcos, 0.89 in Alpine, 0.86 in Valley Center, 0.83 in Escondido, 0.79 in Poway, 0.72 in Ramona, 0.7 in Santee, 0.69 in Encinitas, 0.66 in Carlsbad, 0.65 in La Mesa, 0.56 in Rancho Bernardo, 0.51 in Oceanside, 0.46 in Kearny Mesa, 0.3 in Ocotillo Wells and 0.27 in Borrego Springs and at the San Diego International Airport.
High temperatures Friday could reach 63 degrees near the coast, 63 in the western valleys, 60 near the foothills, 54 in the mountains and 69 in the deserts.
Dry weather is expected on Saturday, but another low-pressure system is expected to arrive late Sunday night and bring mostly light rain into Thursday, forecasters said.
