I'm heading to San Francisco for the Halloween weekend, where I plan to take photos, go to galleries, shop, and EAT, EAT, EAT! But before I depart, I want to leave you, my lusty readers, with some ideas for the weekend.
Austrian artist Johannes Girardoni has an exhibition at Quint Contemporary Art called UNDISCLOSED. Interested in the intersections between painting and sculpture, Girardoni works in found wood, wax, plywood, and plexiglass.
Heads exploding, zombies fighting sharks, bloody rivers, monsters kidnapping children in the night, what more could you ask for from a Halloween movie-fest? The Fourth Annual Horror Trailers Night at the Whistle Stop is tonight at 9 p.m. Just enough to drive you to drink...which you can...because the screening is in a bar.
If you like a little groove on Halloween, R&B soul singer Teedra Moses performs at Anthology on Halloween night.
This will shake you out of a Halloween sugar stupor - in a good way. On Sunday, there will be a single performance of "The Italian Sojourn: Handel in Rome, 1707," at St. James-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.
In the spring of 1706, the then 21-year-old composer left Hamburg and began a grand tour of Italy, which took him to Florence, Venice, then Rome. There Handel spent two years writing his first oratorios and secular cantatas. This is the opening performance in the Bach Collegium San Diego's seventh season.
HALLOWEEN NIGHT
Do you have a costume picked out? How many Maxes and Balloon Boys do you think you'll see this Halloween? Or slutty Maxes and Balloon Boys? Here are a couple of parties you might want to consider:
Subtext is throwing a party with the appropriately named DJ Skullcrusher. They're also having a Halloween raffle, and giving away prizes including art & design books, prints, and even some original artwork! That's reason enough to pull together a costume.
The W San Diego will be transformed into a spooky, "sexy" crypt (you know, just like those sexy crypts you always here about????) where club goers will enjoy five areas of music and 15 top DJ's. I'm sure there will be plenty of spooky scenesters.
The San Diego LGBT Center throws an annual Halloween block party and costume contest called "Nightmare on Normal Street" from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. The festivities include a beer garden, costume parade and costume contests (and lots of elaborate drag).
And, for early next week, the hippy-dippy "Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros" will be performing at the Belly Up. Think "Grateful Dead" with about 7 extra instruments and a female musician that can actually sing. On Tuesday, the 10-member band will perform their folky bluegrass music.
