It sucks being sick and it's even worse to be sick the week of two film festivals and half a dozen film openings. So here are the trailers for a trio of documentaries opening today at Reading Gaslamp Stadium Theaters: "Finding Joe," "Where Soldiers Come From," and "We Were Here."
I wasn't able to screen any of these documentaries but Reading has been doing such a great job bringing indie films to San Diego that I didn't want this trio of films to open without at least letting people know. So here's a quick preview.
The "Joe" of Patrick Takaya Solomon's "Finding Joe" is mythologist, writer, and lecturer Joseph Campbell. The film introduces viewers to Campbell's ideas, primarily "The Hero's Journey," and how these ideas are still relevant today. The film features interviews with a diverse range of people, from Deepak Chopra to Mick Fleetwood; from Tony Hawk to Catherine Hardwicke. Here's the film's trailer:
AIDS is the subject of the next documentary, "We Were Here." The film looks back to the arrival and impact of AIDS on the gay community in San Francisco. Here's the trailer:
And finally, "Where Soldiers Come From" follows a group of young men from their home in a small Northern Michigan town to fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan. Director Heather Courtney follows the young men on a four-year journey. Here's the trailer:
So with all the option available this weekend, I hope some of you will sample the indie fare at Reading Gaslamp.
