KPBS arts reporter Beth Accomando explains how one comic book shop is competing with malls on Black Friday.

ANCHOR INTRO: Everyone probably knows what a Black Friday Sale is but do you know about a 4 Color Friday Sale? KPBS arts and culture reporter Beth Accomando explains what one comic book shop is doing to attract customers. COMIX 1 (ba) (1:14) The day after Thanksgiving has become the official start of the holiday shopping season with Black Friday Sales drawing customers to malls and big box stores. But Robert Scott — the owner of Comickaze in Clairemont -- thought Black Friday was too dull for a comic book store so he decided to hold a 4 Color Friday Sale since most comics are printed in a 4 color process. COMIX 1A (:13) ROBERT SCOTT: Sales have been brisk as you can see we have plenty of people coming in and out so even with all the big box stores doing their special days it looks like fans will still come in and check us out. Everything in the store is currently15% off or 25% off between 7 and 9pm tonight. And WalMart is unlikely to have a full scale replica of Thor's Hammer as a doorbuster sale item. Customer Jorge Pacheco was there for the perk of a $20 gift card for buying $50 worth of comics. COMIX 1B (:11) JORGE PANCHECO: Comics are a little bit expensive so the $50 will add up pretty quick. I'm a comic book artist professionally and this is my passion and it's just nice to be able to come and get a good deal on comic books. Everything in the store was 25% off this morning from 9 to 11am, and then went to 15% off storewide. But it returns to 25% off between 7 and 9pm tonight. And WalMart is unlikely to have some of Scott's special doorbuster sale items.

Thor's Hammer is on sale for the 4 Color Sale at Comickaze.

"One is a full scale replica of Thor's Hammer, the one used in 'The Avengers' movie. It's nice and weighty, with the full leather handle, they only made 500 of these. Our price on this is normally $599 but for today and today only we dropped the price to $399. Everybody knows 'The Walking Dead,' only the hottest TV out right now and we've got a special shooter game you don't need X-Box or anything it just plugs directly into your television set and we normally have that for $69.99 and it's on sale today for $39.99 we were going to do only the single gun version but we have the special edition that comes with a second gun already to go so you and your friends can take on the zombie apocalypse in style."

Customer Jorge Pacheco was there for the perk of a $20 gift card for buying $50 worth of comics.

"Comics are a little bit expensive so the $50 will add up pretty quick. I'm a comic book artist professionally and this is my passion and it's just nice to be able to come and get a good deal on comic books," says Pacheco who was there with his young son.

Scott says this is the time of year people also start to think about Christmas gift: "There's a lot of 'Star Wars' looking, a lot of 'Star Trek,' 'The Walking Dead' obviously, it has picqued a lot of people's interest. We also have a lot of interest in things like 'TinTin' and 'Asterix,' and 'Bone,' a lot of the kid friendly titles as well.
