Four people, including a U.S. citizen, have been arrested in connection with a shooting at the San Ysidro border crossing Tuesday. Federal agents shot at three vans loaded with undocumented immigrants as they supposedly tried to run through the port.
U.S. federal officials said they identified and arrested two of the van drivers. They also said the third ran back to Mexico after the shooting. Mexican authorities arrested him.
U.S. officials say he's a minor and will be prosecuted under a bi-national program that targets human smugglers.
Kevin Rooney, a San Diego Police investigator, said the three agents shot at the vans because they feared for their lives.
"They tried to get the drivers to stop. They were not in a position to hide behind something," he said. "So, on that basis, fearing that the vehicles were going to hit them, the three different federal employees fired their weapons."
Shots hit two people. Two more were injured when the van crashed.
Federal officials did not find any weapons in the vans. They said five minors and 15 women were among the 78 people in the vehicles. Officials said all are undocumented immigrants from Mexico.
