Come August, travelers from Tijuana to San Diego could find some easing of traffic congestion around the border.
Mexico plans to add five northbound lanes to funnel travelers to the inspection booths at San Ysidro. Mexican authorities hope the move will help alleviate traffic that often clogs up Tijuana streets, and forces people to find alternative routes to get to the border line.
But there’s also bad news for border crossers in the coming months. Starting this fall, some northbound lanes will be closed while workers erect a steel canopy over the inspection booths. But those closures will be temporary.
Authorities expect to have double the number of current inspection booths open by September 2014. And that should bring more permanent good news for cross-border commuters.
