San Diego Unified school board president Richard Barrera (right) is expected to propose a timeline for the district’s superintendent search on January 26, 2010.

The San Diego Unified School Board is expected to hammer out a timeline in its search for a new school superintendent today.

San Diego Unified school board president Richard Barrera wants a permanent superintendent in place by July, but his proposed timeline begins this month with the board establishing a 15-member search committee made up of community members.

He's also proposing a series of town hall forums in spring. He wants people to identify qualities they believe makes a successful superintendent.

“Taking into account what the public is saying we're looking for, the committee would narrow down to a list of two or three finalists who would then be brought out to the public. Then the public would get a chance to meet (the candidates), interview them,” Barrera said.

Barrera says its all part of making the search as open and transparent as possible -- a departure from how the district has conducted superintendent searches in the past. The school board will make the final decision.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
