SD School Board One Step Closer To Finding A New Leader

The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is one step closer to picking a new superintendent. The trustees could name the top three finalists as early as tomorrow.

The deadline for candidates to submit their applications was extended to last Friday because the school board was short of two more candidates.

The trustees wanted to interview seven people. They've met with five people so far.

Board president Richard Barrera says the extension yielded another 10 applicants.

He says the board may interview a few more people this week based on their credentials. If none rise to the top, Barrera says the board might settle on three candidates as soon as Tuesday.

“Our goal is really to push, push this process along and make a final decision hopefully by the end of this month,” Barrera said.

Barrera said so far there have been some very strong candidates. He said the interview process is confidential until the top three candidates are named. The top contenders will take part in a series of town hall forums. That's a first for the district.
