The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association says Encinitas won the Best Restored Beach award for putting beach-quality sand on a stretch of beach that has been prone to erosion.

The developer of the Pacific Station Project excavated a two-story garage in Downtown Encinitas.

The excavated sand was placed along the shoreline near Ponto State Beach.

As the replacement sand migrates south it also adds protection to bluffs while creating suitable habitat for shore birds and marine life.

County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price says the project is a prime example of how beaches can be restored while helping the region's economy at the same time.

State officials say California's beaches generate more than $15 billion in tax revenues each year.
