State Senator Christine Kehoe Wednesday called for the creation of a greenway along the Del Mar Fairgrounds and San Dieguito River.
A draft environmental impact report was recently released for the Del Mar State Fairgrounds Master Plan.
The plan includes construction of a condo-hotel and fitness center on the Fairgrounds, in addition to replacing exhibit halls and other construction projects.
Kehoe said creating a greenway on the south side of the fairgrounds along the San Dieguito River would restore a natural buffer and create new public access.
"I think now is the time in conjunction with their other development plans to make sure that there's an adequate public buffer there for pedestrians, bicyclists, birdwatching, native habitat plants, that kind of thing," said Kehoe.
Kehoe said she may introduce legislation next year that would ask a state agency to determine the appropriate size of a buffer area. She said it would have to be wide enough for bikes, strollers and walkers.
