The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for San Diego County mountains and deserts today, due to the possibility of thunderstorms over wildfire-denuded backcountry.
"Excessive runoff from heavy downpours may cause rapid filling and overflowing of normally dry washes, creeks, small streams and low lying areas,'' according to the NWS, which warned of the possibility of rock and mud slides.
The flash flood watch, effective at 10 this morning, was set to expire at 8 p.m.
More than 22,000 acres of backcountry burned in eastern San Diego County last week. Lightning strikes were blamed for at least six fires. No structures were lost. Cal Fire said four firefighters suffered unspecified minor injuries.
