A new report card on children's health and well being gives California low marks in almost every category. It's the 20th annual report from the non-profit advocacy group Children Now.
The report card grades California in 12 different categories, ranging from health coverage to child safety.
It's not a pretty picture. The state gets a D plus for having more than one million uninsured children. It earns a D for low spending on education. And California gets a C minus for the high rate of childhood obesity.
Ted Lempert is president of Children Now.
"Kids in this state, whether it be education indicators, health indicators, their quality of life, are doin' worse than adults," Lempert says. "And we've gotta turn this around if we're gonna have any kind of prosperous future in this state."
Lempert says this year's grades are the worst in the 20 years his group has been issuing its annual report.
