The British government is defending its operations in Afghanistan, which have been sharply criticized by front-line officers who are fighting the Taliban in southern Afghanistan. The officers say they lack troops, equipment and effective air support.
One major in the British Parachute Regiment called the Royal Air Force "utterly useless" in its efforts to provide ground support to soldiers in combat.
His remarks have been dismissed by senior officers as an isolated complaint.
But they have increased pressure on the British government to explain what's happening in Afghanistan, where casualties continue to mount.
