San Diego could soon form Black arts and culture district

San Diego’s Encanto neighborhood could soon host a new Black arts and culture district, thanks to the efforts of community organizers and lawmakers.

If established, the neighborhood would join Balboa Park and Barrio Logan as the only two state-designated cultural districts to exist in San Diego.

Should the city follow through in establishing the new district, it would exist along several blocks of Imperial Avenue in Encanto.

San Diego Council President Pro Tem Monica Montgomery Steppe is among the proponents of a new arts district, saying it would, honor the hard work and contributions of the Black community.

Montgomery Steppe joined Midday Edition on Wednesday with more on the proposal.
