Many Californians, especially Republicans, were disappointed that the June 7 California primary —which had come this close to actually mattering in the protracted presidential nominating process — suddenly became irrelevant yet again.

Donald Trump triumphed. Ted Cruz dropped out. And Hillary Clinton pretty much sewed up the Democratic nomination.

Maybe next time.

The fall election, however, is quite interesting down ballot.

A coalition, which includes billionaire Sean Parker, has gathered enough signatures to place an initiative to legalize marijuana on the November ballot. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) have endorsed it.

In other smoke-related news, Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a series of tobacco control bills regulating the manufacture and sale of e-cigarettes, increasing the legal smoking age from 18 to 21 and requiring that all K-12 schools be tobacco-free.
