San Diego's Top Weekend Events: From Yuna to Twyla GUEST:Nina Garin, editor/producer, KPBS/Arts Calendar

This is KPBS Midday Edition. I'm Maureen Cavanaugh. Our weekend preview is music heavy with season-opening events at children's classic and more. Joining me is arts calendar editor Nina Garin. The San Diego Opera opens its season this weekend, will you remind us what they are staging? We have talked about this, it's a quick reminder that it's "La Cenerentola (Cinderella)" . That's beautiful. I really practiced. It's Cinderella which is Rossini's version, an Italian version. I understand you saw a dress rehearsal, what can people expect? It's so beautiful. It's really fun. It's easy to understand and the sets and the costumes are gorgeous. There are many American singers making their debut. The San Diego Opera "La Cenerentola (Cinderella)" open Saturday. We move to Prince, the SACRA/PROFANA focal ensemble opens with attribute to Prince. They are a local choral ensemble and they like to blend classical music with pop music. They've done things like Madonna and the smashing pumpkins. This weekend they are paying tribute to Prince, how will they do that? Get ready, they are going to cover the entire "Purple Rain" album, they will do a cappella versions in breaking out the different sounds and styles. You brought us a clip. I did. This is SACRA/PROFANA. [ MUSIC ] That's SACRA/PROFANA performing "Purple Rain". Their mission is to promote the love of choral music. Tonight you can see them at the industry which is in East Chula Vista and on Sunday you can see them at the World Beat Cultural Center in Balboa Park. That's the SACRA/PROFANA Prince tribute happening tonight and Sunday. The Symphony is doing its part to introduce music to new audiences, what are they up to cracks Remember when you would go see "Peter and the Wolf"? That's what they are doing. How will this engage young audiences? It's going to feature actors from Junior Theatre and they will show what's going on with the Wolf and the birds. Before the show there will be an instrument discovery area and there will be a performance by a youth orchestra. The San Diego Symphony's "Peter and the Wolf" happens on Sunday afternoon. We moved to Twyla Tharp, remind us who she is. She's a very esteemed modern dance choreographer. She is credited with the first person to crossover ballet and pop music, she did that in 1973. She has been doing things on Broadway, TV, film and white nights. She also did Amadeus. She is and coming? They say she isn't, apparently this is secret, she likes to pop in and check it out. You might see her, that is not confirmed. Her dance company is the one that you will be seeing on stage. What can we expect for them to perform? They are doing three pieces, to old ones in one that's just from this year. Each is 20 minutes and along with the dances you will see costumes by Ralph Lorenz -- Ralph Lauren. It is only Saturday night. Each dance is 20 minutes. The Twyla Tharp dance is Saturday at the Spreckles Theatre. You wanted to be sure to tell us about you not -- She is a singer-songwriter from Malaysia and she is doing music on the Internet and she's getting popular. She is considered Malaysia's first crossover artist and since she's been collaborating with people like Usher and for real Williams. We can now hear a little bit of Yuna . [ MUSIC ] That is Yuna. You can see her at The Music Box and Little Italy on Monday. The Music Box is the old anthology. That was the jazz club in Little Italy and it is now The Music Box. It's been bringing some interesting shows. I read recently, now they are doing booking at the Belly Up. There will be more happening at The Music Box. You have brought us a lot of music. Thank you, so much. I've been speaking with KPBS arts calendar editor, Nina Garin.

This weekend brings a tribute to Prince, pop music from Malaysia and the best of Twyla Tharp.
