The Old Globe stages the United States premiere of "Life After," a new musical by Britta Johnson.

The musical, staged without an intermission, is about a 16-year-old girl dealing with her father's sudden death.

Because it's told from a teen perspective, it's equal parts melancholy, moody and snarky. As she pieces together what happened to her father, she discovers complicated truths about her father and her family dynamic.

Details: "Life After" plays through April 28. Old Globe Theatre, 1363 Old Globe Way, Balboa Park. $39 to $100; find tickets to "Life After."

An Afternoon With Lea Salonga

Music, Theater

The San Diego Symphony presents a concert by Broadway legend Lea Salonga.

Salonga was first seen in the United States when she starred in the original cast of "Miss Saigon," a role that garnered her the first-ever Tony Award for an Asian woman. Salonga was also the first Asian woman to play Eponine from "Les Miserables" on Broadway.

The actress spent time in San Diego in 2012 when she starred in "Allegiance," a musical by actor George Takei inspired by his time spent at a World War II internment camp with other Japanese Americans. Salonga later performed in that musical on Broadway.

In 2011, she was recognized as an official Disney Legend for voicing the characters of Jasmine in "Aladdin" and Fa Mulan in "Mulan."

Details: 2 p.m. Sunday. Jacobs Music Center, 750 B St., downtown. $20 to $76; find tickets to Lea Salonga.
