A major effort is underway to preserve San Diego's African American history. It's part of an upcoming event from the African American Museum of Fine Art called Keepers of the Culture, a celebration of prominent African Americans in the community.
The effort is also aimed at preserving historical pictures and documents for future exhibits at the San Diego History Center, including one this spring on Nathan Harrison, the first African American homesteader in San Diego in the 1850s.

The History Center is encouraging the public to submit their photos and documents on February 8 to have them scanned.
Gaidi Finnie, the executive director of the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art and Elsa Sevilla of the History Center joined Midday Edition to talk about the project.
