Now that the curve of new COVID-19 cases appears to be flattening in San Diego County, the pressure is on to lift restrictions and get the economy going again.
Up until now the focus has been on public health data and stopping the pandemic from spreading. But the other side of the equation is now coming into focus: the economic data on how much the economy is suffering.
SANDAG, the regional body with representation from all 18 cities in San Diego County, published its first weekly report forecasting the potential impacts of the pandemic on the region's economy this week.
"We will overcome this. We will come out of this at some point. We'll be disrupted for a matter of months and in a year or two or three we will be back to where we were before," Ray Major, the chief economist for SANDAG, said.
Major joined Midday Edition on Thursday to talk about what the data currently show for how the coronavirus will impact cities and various business sectors around the county.
