Petco Park Vaccination Super Station Will Reopen Wednesday
UC San Diego officials said the super station at Petco Park will be operational again on Wednesday after a missed Moderna vaccine shipment temporarily shut down the site. The location is operated by UC San Diego Health with support from the county and is usually very busy — delivering 5,000 vaccinations daily.
On Friday, county officials announced the site would be closed for a few days due to lack of supplies, but that shipment is still expected to arrive on Tuesday.
Even though the downtown site is closed, the county's other super stations and smaller sites are still taking vaccination appointments. That includes the CSU San Marcos location and the new drive-thru site that just opened last week at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Monday afternoon the fairgrounds site had first-dose appointments open for majority of this week.
Sharp HealthCare operates super stations in La Mesa and Chula Vista. They told KPBS Monday they had vaccine supply through the end of the week and appointments are still being scheduled.
"Booked it this morning online and came down," Jim Barry of Pacific Beach said of the vaccination he got at Grossmont Center Monday. "They have a good system, it really went smoothly."
People getting vaccinated in La Mesa Monday were not too concerned about any potential delays relating to their second-dose appointments.
"Nah ... Because at the end of the day it's going to happen," said Gil Balaoing of Scripps Ranch. "Worst thing is it will be a few days later."
Most people at the Grossmont Center site Monday said they were getting the Pfizer vaccine and officials have not said those shipments have been delayed.
"They mostly advertised that it was Moderna that was going to be short," said Gail Conrad from Rancho Bernardo. "But we did take the earliest appointment we could with Pfizer."
UC San Diego Health officials said everyone who missed appointments at Petco Park, due to the late shipment, will have them automatically rescheduled via the MyChart system.
Most vaccinations at county-sponsored sites can be booked through MyTurn.
San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said they have open vaccination appointments at Balboa Park and the Malcom X Library for Wednesday and Thursday. People can book them here.
