According to " __ While Black," which is part of The San Diego Union-Tribune's Social Justice Reporting Project, Black identity and experience in the city is often synonymous with exclusion, as well as displays of performative solidarity with efforts to create social change.

Through the testimonies of seven Black San Diegans, the project reveals subtle yet seemingly intentional discrimination that the participants have experienced while living in the city.
The project's author, photojournalist Semoria F. Mosley, joined Midday Edition on Thursday to discuss the issues touched on in her report.
