The mother of Camp Pendleton Marine Lance Cpl. Benjamin Schmidt has told a San Antonio television station that a tank commander has been charged in the "friendly fire" death of her son. The military has charged the tank commander, Sgt. Jason Byrd, with involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and dereliction of duty - according to KSAT-TV.
Lance Cpl. Schmidt was killed October 6, 2011 in Afghanistan. His parents,Dr. David Schmidt and Becky Whetstone, told the San Antonio Express News back in November:
