Most folks who've lived in San Diego for any length of time are reeling from the news that former Charger Junior Seau died today. Media reports say he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, which makes his passing all the more tragic.
Junior Seau spent a large part of his childhood in Oceanside, California, near Camp Pendleton. In fact, his mother Luisa worked at the base commissary when Seau was young, according to Wikipedia.
Seau created the Junior Seau Foundation in 1992. The goal of the foundation, according to its website, is...
To educate and empower young people through the support of child abuse prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, recreational opportunities, anti-juvenile delinquency efforts and complimentary educational programs.
Every year, the Junior Seau Foundation hosts a Thanksgiving dinner at Seau's Restaurant in San Diego. Last year 750 service members, their families, and folks helped out by non-profit agencies attended. During last year's dinner, Seau said:
“I am honored to have the ability to help those less fortunate and the brave members of our military on such a special holiday. I look forward to this day every year.”
