The man who committed suicide Tuesday at Camp Pendleton's Marine Memorial Golf Course was a retired sailor, according to Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigators.
NCIS spokesman Ed Buice told the North County Times that emergency responders were called to the golf course about 9:30 Tuesday morning when a man was seen with a gun.
The man later shot himself in the head, and was declared dead at 10:35 a.m., according to Buice.
Military officials have not released the man's name, age, or where he was from.
An average of 18 veterans commit suicide each and every day, according to the New York Times.
