The parents of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl said this week they received a letter they believe was written by their son. Bergdahl has been a prisoner of war since 2009, when he disappeared near his base in Afghanistan.
The Associated Press reports Bob and Jani Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho, released a statement Thursday through the International Committee of the Red Cross that read, in part:
“Our family is greatly relieved and encouraged by this letter."
According to CNN, Bob Bergdahl wrote to Dwight Murphy of the Boise, Idaho POW/MIA group, informing him of the letter from his son. Murphy then posted the email from the elder Bergdahl on Facebook:
"We have received a letter from Bowe through the Red Cross!
He was scripted and redacted but he was no doubt alive and his faculties fully functioning as of 2 months ago.
They are being very careful with him. He is still highly valued at high levels.
Guantanamo, drones and politics in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Washington are still the big issues."
The U.S. government believes he his being held in Pakistan.
