The National Weather Service called Winter Storm Janus "the biggest snowfall event of the season." But soldiers with "The Old Guard" are standing tall in the face of extreme weather at the Tomb of the Unknowns (also called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) at Arlington National Cemetery.
USA Today reports Janus has disrupted normal life all across the Northeast:
The bitter cold and blowing snow brought many activities to a halt, shutting down schools and government operations and snarling evening commutes as well as air travel.
But the Sentinels of The Old Guard are charged with guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns 24 hours a day, seven days a week - even in weather events like Winter Storm Janus, which hit the D.C. area pretty hard on Tuesday, according to The Washington Post:
Snowfall across the area generally ranged from 4 to 8 inches. Washington Dulles Airport recorded 8.5 inches, Baltimore Washington Airport picked up 5.1 inches, and Washington Reagan Airport came in with 3.8 inches.
The forecast for Arlington, Va. today calls for not as much snow, but colder temperatures. This might make the job of the Sentinels of the Old Guard more difficult, but it won't stop them from fulfilling their task.
