Marine Corps combat veteran Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi has been locked up in a Mexican jail since March 31. His mother told a San Diego television station that thanks to the public outcry in the United States, her son has been moved to a safer jail in Tecate.
Jill Tahmooressi explained to NBC7 that her 25-year-old son was transferred from a Tijuana jail to the El Hongo II penitentiary, where he has his own cell and a guard to protect him.
Meanwhile, Fox News reports that San Diego County Congressman Duncan Hunter has called on Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to suspend military aid to Mexico until Tahmooressi is free:
“You have the authority to suspend cooperation with the Mexican military in a number of areas. In light of the Mexican government’s incarceration of Andrew, I urge you to immediately consider suspending training and equipment assistance to Mexico until Andrew’s case is resolved.”
A little background: Tahmooressi was driving in San Ysidro when he missed the last freeway exit before entering Mexico. In Tijuana, Mexican border guards found firearms in his truck, and Tahmooressi was thrown in jail on weapons charges.
