San Diego continues to maintain its ranking as a top spot for veterans, despite some real challenges.
The city was ranked the sixth best city for veterans by Wallethub. The city ranked No. 1 in education, environment and health.
San Diego’s overall rank would have been higher if it were not for housing costs, said Jill Gonzalez, analyst for Wallethub.
“But the income growth for veterans, specifically over the last five years, has grown by about a percentage point,” Gonzalez said. “Job growth has grown 2 percent. So a lot of times they’re afforded more opportunities, even though it’s a little bit more expensive to live.”
The average wage for jobs related to military service is also higher in San Diego than in many other parts of the country, Gonzalez said.
The city also appears on a number of top lists for military institutions. San Diego State University ranked number 11 in the country on a list put out by Military Times, of veteran-friendly colleges. University of San Diego ranked 74 on the same list.
