Crisis at Hurricane Center

Bill Proenza, the head of the National Hurricane Center in Miami, was put on leave and replaced by the deputy director, six weeks after the official start of hurricane season. He publicly criticized budget priorities and says one of the satellites the center relies on to predict storms was inadequate — a claim the staff says was exaggerated and would undermine confidence in forecasts. Jeff Masters, meteorologist and director of the Internet weather service Weather Underground, spoke with Scott Simon.
