U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood was in San Diego Friday, but he stayed away from controversial issues.
The secretary was in town to speak at the National Port Summit. LaHood kept the discussion focused on port issues. He did not speak about the Toyota recall.
Earlier this week LaHood told Toyota owners to stop driving their cars. An hour later, he said owners should just have their cars fixed.
The summit focused on integrating ports into the country’s freight movement system. Port of San Diego CEO Charlie Wurster says ports play a critical role in getting goods to consumers.
“If you think about the magnitude of goods that are imported in to the United States from overseas. Everything from flat screen TV’s to Nikes, to furniture and all sorts of things like that that we use everyday,” he said.
Wurster says ports must be treated as a national system, both for commercial use and for national defense.
