County Pay Increase Will Not Affect Managers

San Diego County officials say a vote today to increase unclassified employee salaries by 2 percent will not give managers and executives a pay raise.

The Director of Human Resources for the County, Carlos Arauz, says the money budgeted for the increase is to match a union contract negotiated two years ago. It gave classified employees no raise last year and 2 percent this year. But Arauz says, that match will only be given to employees who have similar positions as the union workers.

"There’s also an increase to the salary ranges of the unclassified staff, meaning the executives and so on," Arauz said. "But those employees will not be receiving any kind of increase at all."

Most elected officials at the County have declined to accept pay raises they could have claimed, citing the poor economy.

However, Treasurer Tax Collector Dan McAllister, and County Assessor Dave Butler, both accepted previously approved pay raises of 3 percent and 4.5 percent respectively.

Alison has won awards from the San Diego Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press TV and Radio Association, and the California Golden Mike Awards. Alison was born in Tanzania, brought up in Scotland, and earned her degree in psychology and sociology from Durham University in England. Her postgraduate diploma is in student counseling. She worked in England, Nigeria, Switzerland, Belgium, India, and Japan before moving to the United States in 1981. She now lives in Oceanside and enjoys how her community is growing and changing.
