Budget cuts in the City of San Diego are beginning to bite for library users this week. Starting Saturday, library hours will be cut.
The biggest change is that almost all branch libraries will be closed all day on Mondays, as well as on Sundays. The Main Library downtown will be open Sundays and Mondays but closed all day on Saturdays.
Library Director Deborah Barrow says library use has been increasing.
"There’s been more use of our libraries than ever with seven million checkouts last fiscal year, six million people came to use the library, and it’s trending upward from that. So we’re certainly hoping that funds will come available throughout the city for all of our services, including the library service," she said.
Barrow says branch libraries will be open afternoons and evenings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; on Thursdays and Fridays they will be open during the day only, and Saturdays will be a half day.
The city’s library system took a financial hit of almost $4 million in this year’s budget.
