Lorie Zapf Leads SD City Council District 6 Seat

Absentee returns show incumbent San Diego City Council members Kevin Faulconer and Tony Young with commanding leads in their bids to win reelection outright tonight.

Faulconer, the City Councilman for District 2, had 62.5 percent of the vote, while Young had 64 percent of the vote in District 4.

In District 6, the two front runners are Lorie Zapf with 35.5 percent of the vote to Howard Wayne's 26.5 percent.

Five candidates are running for the seat held by Councilwoman Donna Frye in San Diego's District 6, which includes the communities of Clairemont,

Kearny Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Valley, Serra Mesa and parts of Mission Bay. Frye, who was elected in 2001, is termed-out.

Steve Hadley, Frye's chief of staff, was in third with 16.4 percent of the vote, followed by Kim Tran with 14.2 percent and Ryan Huckabone with 7.21 percent.

There is a close race in District 8, with David Alvarez leading with 21 percent and B.D. Howard, Felipe Hueso and Nick Inzunza all vying for second with about 18 percent of the vote. District 8 includes the communities of Barrio Logan, Grant Hill, Golden Hill, Sherman Heights, Stockton, Logan

Heights, Memorial, Southcrest, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro.

Alvarez is a staffer for Sen. Denise Ducheny, D-San Diego. Howard is a marketing consultant and attorney. Hueso is the brother of the incumbent City Council President Ben Hueso, who is running for state Assembly. Inzunza is the uncle of former District 8 Councilman Ralph Inzunza and the brother of the former mayor of National City.

If no one candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote in each of the races, a runoff will be held in November.
